No início de 2023 fui com alguns amigos ao Templo Zu Lai em São Paulo para uma manhã de pintura. Foi uma surpresa chegar lá e perceber que era exatamente o dia do ano novo chinês, com muita gente, festividades e um clima muito interessante.

Fiz uma pintura na parte Térrea e uma outra no nível da entrada do Templo, onde encontrei uma atmosfera muito bacana para registrar. Sob o som dos tambores, os dragões dançavam e logo na entrada as pessoas paravam para acender os incensos num grande incensário ao fim da escadaria.

Pintar no local é sempre muito empolgante, pois é preciso lidar com o que é possível ali. Pouco espaço, pessoas olhando e todo o movimento em volta…Tudo isso pode desconcentrar um pouco, mas também faz com que se possa entrar no ambiente que está sendo pintado.

Fiz um sketch em uns 30 minutos, mais ou menos, e me pareceu bom para captar o clima alí.

Sometimes a theme seems so precious that it deserves a deeper look into its elements. And I end up making some versions in sizes, compositions and even with different techniques.

In early 2023 I went with some friends to the Zu Lai Temple in São Paulo for a morning of painting. It was a surprise to get there and realize that it was exactly the day of the Chinese New Year, with a lot of people, festivities and a very interesting mood.

I made a painting on the ground floor and another on the entrance level of the Temple, where I found a very nice atmosphere to catch. Under the sound of drums, dragons dancing and right at the entrance people stopped to light incenses in a large censer at the end of the staircase.

Painting on location is always very exciting as you have to deal with what is possible there. Little space, people looking and all the movement around… All this can distract a little, but it also makes it possible to enter the environment that is being painted.

I made a sketch in about 30 minutes or so, and it seemed good to capture the mood there.

Já no estudio, olhando a pintura, senti que havia muitos pontos que a correria não me deixou aproveitar muito bem. Talvez precisasse organizar mais e dar peso ao primeiro plano e deixar os elementos ao fundo um pouco mais suaves. Então decidi fazer um pequeno estudo monocromático, com aquarela de grafite e alterar algumas coisas pra ver. Com isso achei que a imagem teria potencial para uma pintura maior.

Already in the studio, looking at the painting, I felt that there were many points that the rush did not let me take advantage of them very well. Maybe it needed to organize and weight the foreground a bit more and make the elements in the background a little softer. So I decided to do a small monochromatic study, with graphite watercolor and change some things to see. With that I thought the image would have potential for a larger painting.

Decidi me aventurar pintando em superfície telada. O que em si já foi um desafio. A idéia era trazer talvez um aspecto mais nobre para o acabamento final.

Tive que trabalhar na horizontal, sem contar com a gravidade, já que a textura da tela não segura o pigmento estável como o papel, porém a umidade se mantém por bastante tempo, permitindo fusões e uma fluidez bem interessante no processo de pintura.

Acabei com 3 processos e 3 resultados totalmente diferentes, mas ao olhar tudo junto, ainda gosto mais daquele que surgiu em meia hora, ali na muvuca, com barulho, água escorrendo e o cheiro de incenso. 

Um bom tema vale essa experimentação, mas pela minha experiência, dificilmente uma pintura de estudio vai trazer a expressão e a espontaneidade de uma experiência en Plein air.

I decided to venture out painting on a canvas surface. Which in itself was a challenge. The idea was to perhaps bring a more noble aspect to the final finishing.

I had to work horizontally, without relying on gravity, since the texture of the canvas does not hold the pigment like paper, but the humidity is maintained for a long time, allowing fusions and a very interesting fluidity in the painting process.

I ended up with 3 processes and 3 completely different results, but when looking at them all together, I still like the one that came up in half an hour, right there in the crowd, with noise, dripping water and the smell of incense.

A good theme is worth this experimentation, but in my experience, a studio painting is unlikely to bring the expression and spontaneity of an experience en plein air.
